Two heavy-duty trucks are available in the 2024 GMC Sierra HD lineup. Series 2 and 3 models are Sierra 2500 and 3500. There are plenty of other options to make the building interesting and fun. The Sierra HD can be a hard worker or a home on wheels. We can’t recommend only a thing or two, since there are many parts that deserve highlights.
First, you need to choose between Sierra 2500 HD and Sierra 3500 HD models. Four cab/box configurations are available. Depending on this selection, there are several trim levels and options. Even the base model is nicely loaded. If you are looking for off-road specialists, the AT4 versions will take you everywhere. Or, if you want a luxury truck, the Denali Ultimate is the new package with the latest features and options.
Performance is the key thing for heavy-duty trucks. The 2024 GMC Sierra HD offers both petrol and diesel units. The Duramax powertrain is not delivering the same level of torque as its main rivals, but the 2024 GMC Sierra HD can tow up to 36,000 pounds. The Sierra 3500 can also be turned into a dually truck.
Engines and Towing Capacity
In the era of electrification, key people are letting HD trucks use oil burners. In the future, even those vehicles will turn into EVs. Until that happens, diesel engines will be needed for the best towing results. General Motors introduced a new petrol engine for the HD lineup, but it was overshadowed by the Duramax system. Why? It can tow 36,000 pounds. You need a dual-rear-wheel configuration on the Sierra 3500 model to do that.
A 6.6-liter turbodiesel now delivers 470 hp and 975 lb-ft. It is an improvement from 910 pound-feet from the previous edition. The new Allison transmission allowed engineers further tuning on the engine and the result is astonishing 36,000 pounds of towing capacity with the Sierra 3500 HD DRW. The Series 2 truck can’t reach this level, staying at 22,500 lbs.
A petrol engine is not so exciting. It is a new unit – a 6.6-liter displacement can produce 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. Converted to the towing capacity, that is 18,700 lbs for the Sierra 2500 and 19,150 pounds if you take the Sierra 3500 HD configuration. A 10-speed automatic transmission distributes the power.
2024 GMC Sierra HD Models
The versatility of the lineup also comes from trim-level choices. Regular Cab and Double Cab are available in Pro and SLE variants. Crew Cab adds further options – 4 more grades (SLT, AT4, Denali, Denali Ultimate) and two bed sizes (Standard and Long).
The entry-level Pro package is not so special with steel wheels, a 7-inch multimedia screen, and manual trailering mirrors. There are a few usable features, such as a reverse camera, Hitch Guiding system, or a pair of USB ports.
The SLE adds alloy wheels, more upscale materials inside the cabin, power mirrors, MultiPro tailgate, cruise control, larger infotainment screen and keyless entry feature.
The SLT becomes available with the Crew Cab configuration. This is already a stacked grade with all-terrain tires, chrome accents, LED bed lights, and power outlet. Inside the cabin, there are leather seats, zonal climate control, memory settings for driver’s power-adjustable bucket, heated seats and steering wheel. The 2024 GMC Sierra HD also offers a smartphone trailering app.
AT4 Off-Road Goodies
Both heavy-duty trucks can become off-roaders with the AT4 package. The new AT4x could also debut, with improved features, something like Denali Ultimate and Denali trims. The base AT4 comes with 4×4, hill assist, unique suspension setup, skidplates, and recovery hooks. To make towing more convenient, the company adds a spray-in bedliner. There are also a few premium features, such as ventilated seats and navigation.
2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali and Denali Ultimate
The best version of the truck can tow as much as other versions, since both premium packages are available with a diesel engine. The Denali version is packed with high-end options, such as 20-inch wheels, wood and aluminum trims, premium leather, advanced navigation, Bose audio, bed camera, and many more.
The 2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate adds even more goodies. The grille is blacked out. At the center of the dashboard is a 13-inch infotainment screen. Driver’s display is also larger. Technology package is standard with the Denali Ultimate grade, as well as HUD, 12-speaker Bose sound, and MultiPro tailgate with all functions.
Pricing
With so many options, the 2024 GMC Sierra HD truck can cost from $46,500 and the price can be doubled with all the upgrades available. It is hard to say what configurations are the best. You should probably go after the diesel engine. That is a $10k upgrade compared to the petrol unit. A four-wheel drive is around $3,000. You can also pick a dual-rear-wheel drive setup, which is a $1,300 option both for 2WD and 4WD.
